What is the Heritage Action Zone?

Members of North Tyneside’s voluntary and community sector have been working with local artists to unearth and share fascinating stories of life on Howard Street in North Shields.

The work is being delivered as part of the wider High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) project which forms part of North Tyneside Council’s ambitious master plan to transform North Shields town centre and riverside.

As part of the VODA-led partnership, we are delivering three Make It Happen volunteer programmes for people and community groups to work alongside professional artists to co-produce arts and cultural events inspired by the heritage of North Shields.

Delivered through a series of bespoke workshops, participants can learn how to plan, do and review their own community art projects.

Sessions will cover ideas development, programme planning, management and coordination, artist recruitment and management, budget, and controls, monitoring and evaluation.

Each Make It Happen programme will culminate in a celebration and showcase event held in the North Shields Heritage Action Zone.

Celebrating the Heritage Action Zone

On 2 September the local community joined to celebrate with both ourselves and cultural partners the work created over the last two years as part of the Heritage Action Zone. Enjoying a series of free activities, exhibitions and films in and around Howard Street, North Shields, visitors got to indulge in local heritage.

Being transported back in time to 1836 Northumberland Square, residents also had the opportunity to come along to our Georgian Cluedo performance at The Exchange 1856. Audience members joined Dolly who had lost her friend and the other characters as the mystery unfolded. Available to watch for free, head across to our Georgian Cluedo page to immerse yourself in the action now.

You can also find out more about the celebration and  activities by taking a read of events What’s on guide.
