Examining an old document about North Shields

Howard Street and Northumberland Square include some of the best parts of North Shields' Georgian and Victorian town centre with some strikingly elegant buildings and public spaces. The area links up the newly regenerated Fish Quay on the Tyne with the town centre.

Members of North Tyneside’s voluntary and community sector have been working with local artists to unearth and share fascinating stories of life on Howard Street in North Shields. The work is being delivered as part of the wider High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) project which forms part of North Tyneside Council’s ambitious master plan to transform North Shields town centre and riverside.

As part of the VODA-led partnership, we are delivering three Make It Happen volunteer programmes that will support and empower individuals and community groups to work alongside professional artists to co-produce arts and cultural events inspired by the heritage of our Heritage Action Zone.

Delivered through a series of bespoke workshops, volunteers will be supported to plan, do, and review their own community art projects. Sessions will cover ideas development, programme planning, management and coordination, artist recruitment and management, budget, and controls, monitoring and evaluation. Each Make It Happen programme will culminate in a celebration and showcase event held at The Exchange.

So far…

Our young person led Make It Happen was launched in April 2022. Working with students from John Spence Community High School over eight weeks, participants began to form ideas for a project set in the Georgian Era. Researching the era as they went, participants developed skills in artist recruitment, sticking to budget and the type of roles involved in project planning.

Having completed the training, group members are now putting their new skills and ideas into action, working with local artists to bring their event to life.

Coming up...

Introducing our community cohort- A chance to develop ideas for a local community art project for the Heritage Action Zone in North Shields. Members will have the opportunity to plan for and really deliver an event they designed themselves!
