Over the last 40 years we’ve worked with a variety of artists across numerous artforms – providing opportunities for employment, training, support and mentoring.

Many of the artists we’ve supported have gone on to develop their practice and worked on their own projects, and we’ve continued to support them on their journeys by:

Sharing marketing & promotion
Supporting funding bids
Providing commissions & small pots of funding
Reviewing project plans
Supporting networking & relationship building

MOTHEROTHER

MOTHEROTHER is an inclusive and supportive collective for artists who are also caregivers. The term caregiver applies to the broad spectrum of parents, guardians and carers across our community.

MOTHEROTHER is an artist led initiative founded by Sue Loughlin and supported by Lady Kitt, Dan Russell and Cheryl Gavin.

Tranquil

Tranquil is an ongoing project which works to created adaptable performance for rural Northumberland communities created through a partnership between Pelican Theatre and Meta4 Dance.

Supported by Arts Council England, Tranquil is a package of workshops, performances which focus on the positive outcomes of nature on our wellbeing.

Opening the Closet Doors

‘Opening the Closet Doors’ is an art and film project that was created and developed by artist Sarah Li.

Working with local LGBTQ+ adults the project referenced the archives of the Darlington Hippodrome they explored these amazing archives with the incredible and very knowledgeable historian James Davison to uncover LGBTQ+ histories, stories, shows and performers.

Narratives and inspirations from the project were developed into creative responses that were exhibited at the Darlington Hippodrome in August 2022 and are available to view in an online exhibition

Move Up

Delivered by TeesDance, in partnership with Darlington Hippodrome, Move UP was 6 month programme in 2022 for young dancers to learn how to become a choreographer and make their own dance piece for stage.

This unique opportunity gave young people aged 14 to 19, or up to 25 with disabilities, the chance to develop their creative, choreographic skills and showcase their creation on Darlington Hippodrome’s main stage.

Taming the Garden

Social Art Network North East partnered with Helix Arts and Star and Shadow Cinema in January 2023 to screen the documentary ‘Taming the Garden’. A free event, the screening was followed by a facilitated discussion about community and social practice with social artist and film maker Christo Wallers.

Project Other

In 2021 artists Benedicta Mamuini and Lila Naruse with the support and mentoring of Helix Arts created ‘Others’.

Project ‘’Other’’ was an R&D for a mixed media live performance dance duet which explored personal experiences of mixed-culture upbringings. Inspired by Benedicta and Lila’s mixed cultured up brings with focus on blended culture, they chose to explore culture as something malleable, not a category of ridged boxes for us to tick off on a form.
