In spring and summer 2024, creative producers and local artists hosted a series of community listening sessions—held at local events and dedicated drop-ins—that reached over 50 individuals. These sessions sparked meaningful conversations and led to a wonderful connection with the West Moor Stitcherz, a passionate community group with a love for textiles and storytelling.
Meeting weekly, the Stitcherz shared their vision: to create a textile map that celebrates the rich history and heritage of West Moor. To bring this idea to life, North Tyneside artist Rachel Brien was invited to collaborate with the group. Rachel supported the volunteers by guiding design planning, sparking creative ideas, and helping the group define roles and responsibilities—building on their existing skills and enthusiasm.
Over the course of 10 creative sessions, the group produced a textile banner that highlights key themes of local pride, including Mining, George Stephenson, and West Moor landmarks.
The banner made its debut at the West Moor Community Centre’s festive celebration on 1st December 2024, where an estimated 200 residents gathered to enjoy the launch.
Affectionately nicknamed the ‘Banner Belles’, the group expressed how much they enjoyed the project—and they’re not stopping here. Energised by their success, they plan to continue meeting and are already planning their next creative adventure.
