Bookbinding & photography with Bex Harvey

Between January and March 2026, participants worked with artist Bex Harvey to explore the creative worlds of bookbinding and photography.

Together they crafted their own handmade books, learning how to stitch pages, build strong bindings, design covers and experiment with finishing techniques that reflected their individual styles.

The group also tried their hand at paper dyeing and papermaking, adding colour, texture and personality to their creations.

Alongside the bookbinding, participants developed practical photography skills using just their phones — from framing and composition to understanding how lighting transforms an image. They then used free editing software to refine and post‑produce their photos, building confidence in taking and editing high‑quality images.

Work created from the block, will be exhibited in the North Tyneside Business Centre early summer, showcasing not only the groups artwork but curation skills too.

“I think Bex our instructor is fantastic, she has encouraged me to think about my creativity out of the box. She has also given me support when I assisted others. I feel very strongly that she is a motivated creative artist who understands mental health and supporting people without asking questions. I feel so much more confident in my abilities since starting this course.”

Ceramics with Lindsey Grieves

Between September and December 2025, participants worked with ceramicist Lindsey Grieves to explore the creative possibilities of clay. Over three months, the group produced a vibrant mix of work — from playful Halloween pieces to festive Christmas creations, alongside personal items that expressed their own identities.

Starting with soft clay and finishing with fully glazed artworks, participants learned how to shape, mould and refine their pieces, building confidence and strengthening fine motor skills in a calm, relaxing studio environment.

Their finished ceramics were proudly showcased in a shared exhibition at Helix Arts in December, celebrating the achievements of everyone involved in both the ceramics programme and our Here to There South Shields workshops.

Watercolours with Sue Warlock

Our 25 – 26 programme started out with gentle and tranquil set of workshops with Sue Warlock. Participants worked between April and July to develop their individual skills in fine art and painting. Taking time out and using the artform to reflect and slow down.

Participants worked in multiple mediums including gelli plate printing, working with coloured pencils and a range of watercolours. Creating a selection of artworks participants concentrated on themes of animals, places/people they love and nature. Take a look below at the artwork they produced.
