Helix Arts is putting together a creative team to deliver The People’s Tree; a project commissioned by the National Trust.

The People’s Tree is an ambitious collaborative project combining public participation, sound, architecture and storytelling to respond to the loss of the much‑loved Sycamore Gap tree.

The tree stood in a dip along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland for more than 100 years before it was illegally felled in September 2023. Its loss hit people far beyond the North East, and the National Trust wanted whatever came next to reflect the widespread feelings the feeling evoked.

The proposal scored highest across the public vote and with the judges, ensuring unanimous confidence in the commission creating something meaningful for local and regional communities, as well as its ability to touch people nationwide.

Opportunities

We are seeking artist-makers, craftspeople and storycatchers based in the North-East and Cumbria to facilitate workshops in schools and diverse community settings along Hadrian’s Wall.

The artists will respond to themes of the tree, seeds, hope and nature and will co-produce high quality creative work with the community.

This project will see hundreds of participants take part across various settings including community groups and schools. Because of this, each brief may result in multiple artists recruited.
