‘Narrative Shift’ is a new Helix Arts commission produced by artist Amy Langdown. Amy is a queer, neurodivergent and disabled writer, facilitator, producer and artist based in the North-East. Amy has spent their career so far working for various charities to deliver accessible art, writing, drama, signing and other workshops to young people and adults, especially those in underserved communities. Amy’s passion is centered around participatory arts – making the arts accessible and more diverse – and showing the impact that the arts can have on our mental and physical wellbeing.
Their commission for Helix Arts ‘Narrative Shift’ is all about changing the narratives around queerness and disability.
Through a series of spoken word poetry workshops Amy has been using this commission to platform and spotlight the voices of communities who are too often spoken for rather than listened to. Participants have been creating individual poems, and also collaborating on group poems to take control of narratives around queerness and disability.
Workshops have now finished and participants will be shared their work live at a sharing event for friends and family of participants.
