Not as it is written

2017

Exploring the history of civil rights in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Contexts:

Schools / Social Justice

Not as it is Written was part of the Freedom City 2017 international exhibition running in Newcastle and Pittsburgh simultaneously.

The programme brought together two rich collections: of photos by ‘one shot’ Charles ‘Teenie’ Harris taken during the 1950s-70s and modern day oral histories from people who lived that history. Together they explored the history of civil rights in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

People from the North East were invited to join others from around the world to get involved and share their own reflections by downloading the free exhibition app.

We worked with pupils from Newcastle Bridges School throughout November and December to explore themes such as boundaries, community, freedom and local heroes.

Not as it is Written was on display at the Great North Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne, as part of Freedom City 2017 until 1st December 2017.

Supported by the Economic and Social Research Council.
