In 2023, Helix Arts will deliver an exciting programme of workshops in which local people can co-design two public artworks in North Shields town centre.

The sites are in front of North Shields Magistrates Court and on the land next to the traffic lights at Borough Road/ Prudhoe Street junction.

The commissions are part of North Tyneside Council’s masterplan for North Shields which will see a total of 5 new public artworks created. We will commission a local artist to work with residents in schools and various community spaces throughout Spring 2023. The workshops will explore what people think is important in North Shields’ past, present and future.

We will be working with London-based Street Art organisation Wood Street Walls to deliver the project alongside Canadian artist Aaron Li Hill.

The story so far

Take a watch of the short films below, showcasing the North Shields Public Art projects story so far and how the public have got involved.

Community Sketchbook

Throughout Spring 2023 members from the local community took part in workshops delivered by artist Laura Brenchley to create and share their own ideas for the Public Artworks. Each piece of art was then collated to form a Community Sketchbook showcasing the thoughts of North Shields residents.

Local schools and organisations were also invited to get involved. This included Christchurch Primary, Spring Gardens Primary, Norham High School, John Spence High School, North Tyneside Art Studio, MumSpace North Shields and Cedarwood Trust.

Residents additionally had the option of attending drop-in workshops at the Beacon Shopping Centre and Royal Quays as well as taking part and submit from home through an short film by Laura.

Over the community engagement period almost 300 contributions were created and curated into the sketchbook.
