Home Thoughts

Ongoing

'Home Thoughts' is an artist-led commission for our Creative Health programme Better Connect.

‘Home Thoughts’ reflects on themes of home exploring local community residents' interpretation of it.

The project at its core was developed with the following two themes:

  • The universal right to a home
  • The universal need to feel at home

Community art workshops in paper mache houses and 5-word stories exploring this theme took place in Whitley Bay in 2024. They took place with local community organisations including SPARCS and the Whitley Bay Memory Cafe.

Whitley Bay residents also had the chance to get involved through open studio days hosted by artists Jenny and Gaynor in December. Artwork created included hanging mobiles which showcase memories and thoughts relating to home.

Artwork and creative writing pieces produced from these workshops were showcased as part of varying local exhibitions which included

  • The Open Studio at Whitley Bay Big Local
  • Whitley Bay Hub Cafe
  • The Bank Studios in North Shields
  • Light Waves event at Fiesta in St Pauls Church

Still ongoing ‘Home Thoughts’ will continue to run workshops in 2025 and tour/exhibit creative products across the borough.
