North Shields Public Art Project

November 2022 - Ongoing

Our North Shields: Past, Present, Future.

We're bringing public artworks co-designed with local people to 2 key sites in North Shields as part of the town's ongoing regeneration.

Collaborative artwork form Helix Arts participants.

Partners:

North Tyneside Council & Wood Street Walls

Creative Producer:

Amy Taylor

In 2023, Helix Arts will deliver an exciting programme of workshops in which local people can co-design two public artworks in North Shields town centre.

The sites are in front of North Shields Magistrates Court and on the land next to the traffic lights at Borough Road/ Prudhoe Street junction.

The commissions are part of North Tyneside Council’s masterplan for North Shields which will see a total of 5 new public artworks created. We will commission a local artist to work with residents in schools and various community spaces throughout Spring 2023. The workshops will explore what people think is important in North Shields’ past, present and future.

We will be working with London-based Street Art organisation Wood Street Walls to deliver the project alongside Canadian artist Aaron Li Hill.

PUBLIC ART WORKSHOPS SPRING 2023

If you can’t make it in person to one of the public workshops with artist Laura Brenchley then you can still contribute your ideas for the North Shields Public Artworks. Take a look at the video below featuring Laura who will be running the collage workshops, make something, take a photo and and email it to info@helixarts.com please put Public Artworks in the email subject line. You could also include a couple of lines about why you chose the design and what it means to you.

All of the designs made in workshops and sent to us via email will be curated by Laura in to a Community Sketchbook for North Shields which will act as a starting point for Aaron Li Hill who will be designing the artworks based on all of the ideas gathered in the workshops.

Throughout February, March and April 2023 Laura Brenchley will be delivering workshops in education and community settings to gather as many ideas as possible for the Public Art Community Sketchbook. Check our NEWS pages for details of public sessions in and around North Shields.

So far Laura has worked with Christchurch Primary, Spring Gardens Primary, Norham High School, John Spence High School, North Tyneside Art Studio, MumSpace North Shields and Cedarwood Trust. Almost 300 contributions and sketchbook pages of ideas and stories have been collected so far. We are also visiting Meadow Well Connected, North Shields Library reminiscence Group, Walking With, KE Enterprises, Royal Quays and the Beacon Shopping Centre.
