A group of older adults stand in a bright, spacious room, participating in a lively group activity. Each person holds their hands in circles around their eyes, playfully mimicking binoculars. They wear casual, comfortable clothing suitable for movement. The room is filled with natural light from large windows, and chairs and other participants are visible in the background, suggesting a communal, recreational setting

A weekly dance programme for people over 55 in North Tyneside who want to improve their strength, balance and mobility.

What is Falling On Your Feet?

Helix Arts runs a vibrant dance and health programme welcoming participants aged 55+ to explore movement, expression, and community.

During weekly workshops, participants take part in gentle dance exercises adapted for both floor and chair. The sessions support strength, flexibility, and stability while helping reduce the risk of falls — all in a joyful, inclusive space.

Working with a range of experienced dancer artists, participants co-create expressive movement phrases inspired by changing themes such as connection and stability. The focus is on both physical wellbeing and emotional connection through collaborative dance.

After the movement, the group gathers for a cuppa and conversation — sparking friendships and a strong sense of togetherness.

Sessions are free, but registering and pre-booking for the term is essential due to limited availability.

To book please email admin@helixarts.com call 0191 241 4931.

Check out some of our previous blocks of work.

Each 10–12 week block invites participants to collaborate on a fresh theme chosen with our choreographer. Together, the group develops original creative pieces, performing them both for one another and for local audiences.

Working with artist Debbi Purtill

From April to June 2026, participants explored contemporary and ballet styles, creating pieces such as a chair waltz, Maria’s adage, and a dance celebrating the seasons.

The Guest

Members of the group performed in Anthony Lo‑Guidice’s The Guest in North Shields, joining North Tyneside Youth Dance for an intergenerational routine also featured at the NS800 parade.

Working with Lynn Campbell

Participants experimented with aerial and contemporary dance, improvisation, and storytelling through movement. Their performances reflected themes of growing up, the sea, and water, shared with other Better Connect groups and at community events.

I’m part of the wonderful group of women who form Helix Arts “Falling on your Feet” group. We meet weekly for movement, creative dance with a bit of “ theatre” chucked in.. We are inspired by our collective ideas and supported by the wonderful artists dancers choreographers and writers from Helix. We are a friendly welcoming bunch of “ not so young” but enthusiastic positive women who are now friends. It’s a highlight of my week for sure.
