The artist worked with young people aged 15-17 at HMP Castington Young Offenders Institution, prison staff, young people from Amble Artograffi Group and staff at Amble Development Trust to enhance the creative and technical skills of the young people through engagement with artists using digital media. The project culminated in the production of two animated films - Walls of Silence and Operatunity Knocks.

Blyth 2000-2002
Spread over several months, this project was a collaboration with Turning Point in Blyth, Northumberland and involved people with substance abuse problems. The artist, Sally Olding, together with staff and clients from Turning Point, created a multi-media, interactive web-based artwork which explored visions of ideal worlds. The launch of the work, A Big Story For To Tell, took place at the Phoenix Theatre in Blyth.
New Media Artist: Simon Northrop
North Tyneside 2001
Led by new media artist Simon Northrop, this residency was a collaboration between artists, musicians and writers living and working in North East England and North Tyneside-based voluntary organisations Turning Point and the Pyramid Project. The work, Ground, was launched at The Buddle Arts Centre in Wallsend, North Tyneside.

Hebburn 1999-2000
During a twelve-month residency the artist worked with students and members of the local community to produce a sculptural feature in steel for the entrance of the former Monkton Cokeworks site at Hebburn, Tyne & Wear.

The artist spent nine months working with inmates and staff at a Close Supervision Centre in HM Prison Durham. The paintings produced explored visions of the future and were published as postcards and a year 2000 calendar.

Sunderland 1999
This four-month residency involved offenders from Southwick in the creation of an interactive sound sculpture/installation for St. Margaret's Church in Sunderland as part of Northumbria Probation Service's commitment to Helix Arts' Visions of Utopia project. The piece addressed community safety and fear of crime, drawing its inspiration from the interactive nature of security devices that are activated by movement, sound and heat.

South Shields 1999
Through Northumbria Probation Service, offenders from South Shields were able to work alongside the artist and Sunderland University students in the creation of digitally produced images exploring the participants' Visions of Utopia. An exhibition was produced at The Customs House as well as a 1999 calendar.

The artist worked with students from The Alfred Barrow School in Barrow-in-Furness on a site-specific installation for the Visions of Utopia project exploring the theme Traveling to Utopia. The piece was installed at Barrow railway station.

Artist Julia Barton worked with staff, architects and users of the service in the refurbishment of the Centre for the Health of the Elderly at Newcastle General Hospital. The project was handed over to Newcastle City Health NHS Trust in March 1999.

The Journeys project was a long-term arts partnership in north Sunderland with Northern Stage and Opera North. The project involved innovative artistic collaboration between Japanese and UK artists together with active community participation. In July 1994 there was a site-specific music event at Hylton Castle, followed by a project involving Opera North and artists across discipline working with the community.

The St. Peters Riverside Project has produced features and infrastructure designs in collaboration with the local community and developers for the public access areas of the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation's flagship riverside developments in Sunderland. North East 1991-1992
A nine-month creative residency for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Cleveland, Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear. In addition, the artists were commissioned to produce work that explored and challenged misconceptions and prejudices surrounding HIV/AIDS. Work by the artists and participants culminated in a publication called Living Proof, three exhibitions and theatre performances. One of the images produced during the project was displayed on billboards across the UK as part of the BBC Billboard Project in 1992.

The artist worked for six months with patients at Plummer Court in Newcastle, a regional drug and alcohol service. The work produced toured gallery and non-gallery venues, forming part of a major exhibition at Plummer Court's new public art space Gallery for Change. During a six-month extension, David developed the gallery while continuing to work with users of the service.

A six-month residency based at Newcastle Probation Day Centre working with clients and staff in Newcastle. The individuals in the project created murals for the Centre as well as paintings and drawings to tour centres, offices and other premises throughout the Northumbria Probation Service.

Six-month placement working with patients in the Psychiatry Department of the recently built North Tyneside District General Hospital. Artists and patients produced a mural for the hospital in addition to paintings that toured various venues in the area. This programme drew on community participation to provide environmental artworks along the banks of the Wear in Sunderland, with initial research carried out by artist Helen Smith. In a six-month residency artist Julie Livsey designed a sculptural community garden with a tenants' group from the Squares Housing Estate in Southwick. Artist Keith Bridgewood worked with young people to design and install elements in the vicinity of Dame Dorothy School. This led to a three-year environmental public art programme The Artscape Project developed by Arts Resource.
